Healthy Environment for Our Next Generation

Healthy Environment for Our Next Generation

Clean water, unpolluted air and adequate food are the basic needs for mankind on Earth. However, globalization and industrialization are the fundamental cause of pollutions, global warming and species extinction, which are caused by human intervention. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), exposure to environmental-related pollutants kills more than 3 million children under the age of five each year. Children are the pillars of our future and the continuation of human life. Thus, they have the right to grow in a healthy and safe environment, away from the exposures of toxins as well as having access to the basic needs.

The environmental hazards and pollution often contribute to childhood deaths, infections and disabilities.

INDOOR AND OUTDOOR AIR POLLUTION

The children’s immune system and lungs are not fully developed and they breathe in more air than adults, making them more vulnerable to air pollutants and have a higher risk of developing respiratory diseases such as asthma, pneumonia, etc.

CONTAMINATED WATER/POOR SANITATION

In Sub-Saharan Africa, 43% of children consume contaminated water and one in five die before their fifth birthday. Besides, many children also suffer from waterborne illnesses such as typhoid fever and cholera.

EXPOSURE TO TOXIC/CHEMICALS

Pollutants such as lead, mercury in fish, fluoride in drinking water can impose significant adverse effects on children health.

CLIMATE CHANGE

The environmental impact of climate change such as extreme heat waves, rising sea levels or erratic rainfall can affect food security and water supplies for our next generations.
